How to Choose the Right Chips/Popcorn to Snack On

Part of what makes us all human is our love for snacks. We can’t help it. Whether we’re bored, hungry, or both, we have those cravings between meals to snack on something tasty. If you truly can’t help yourself, I want to make sure you are making the right, healthy choices that don’t break the bank.

Starting this week I’ll be covering Savory Snacks, today being the Chips/Popcorn edition. I’ll give you the BAD, the BETTER, and the BEST when it comes to shopping for these crunchy treats. BAD will be your cheap items you can find just about anywhere. BETTER will have ingredients that aren’t quite perfect, but will be healthier, but typically cost less than BEST. And BEST will be your items to truly optimize your grocery choices, but will typically cost you a little more and be found at the higher end grocery stores (Whole Foods/Sprouts).

What to look for when it comes to the ingredients:

1. The oil it’s produced in. I did a whole post about this about a month ago where you want to AVOID highly processed and highly refined oils such as safflower, sunflower, vegetable canola unless they specifically say they are “expeller pressed”. Oils to BUY are avocado, coconut, and olive (preferably extra virgin) as they are heart healthy oils that don’t cause inflammation.
2. Organic when it comes to corn. Corn is tested to have some of the highest levels of pesticides so it typically is better to go organic here if the price is right.
