How to Choose the Right Crackers

Building off of a previous blog covering the healthiest chips to buy, today we are going over crackers. Whether you like savory, cheesy, or are gluten-free, I have you covered.

Similar to last week, there are certain ingredients you want to look out for and avoid:

1. AVOID these oils - sunflower, safflower, canola, palm, vegetable, peanut unless “expeller pressed” or “organic” and they should be replaced with these - avocado, olive, coconut, red palm
2. NO preservatives such as maltodextrin, BHT, and dextrose
3. NO natural flavors
4. BUY WHOLE wheat grains and AVOID enriched/bleached wheat
5. NO added sugar

Something you will see on nutrition labels quit commonly are “net carbs”. What are net carbs? They are carbohydrates in your food you can digest and use for energy. How do you calculate? Easy - take the fiber listed and subtract it from the total carbs. Fiber isn’t broken down into glucose like most carbohydrates so typically you don’t count those when calculating your carb intake.
